ChatGPT’s Impact on Automotive Security and Safety

As we’ve previously covered in the first part of our two-part discussion, ChatGPT has demonstrated the ability of machines to learn human knowledge to an unprecedented degree, while also showcasing the performance enhancements of large-parameter models like GPT-3. However, expectations and speculations when it comes to new technology must always be balanced with security and safety considerations. 

The advantages 

Looking at similar models applied in the automotive industry gives us an idea of their impact on security and safety. For example, a Chinese company called Haomo has already taken inspiration from this approach and proposed its idea model, DriveGPT. Using RLHF algorithms, DriveGPT trains a massive-parameter autonomous driving decision-making model, promising to improve safety and performance on the road. 

In 2018, Uber’s autonomous vehicle testing resulted in the death of a pedestrian crossing the street. A similar incident happened when a Tesla car collided with a white semitruck crossing the road, the vehicle having mistaken the truck for a cloud and failing to identify it in time, thus resulting in a fatal accident. Such incidents have fueled different opinions on autonomous driving.  

In response to the Uber incident, the US National Transportation Safety Board issued an investigative report that detailed the timeline leading up to the collision. According to the report, the system was unable to classify the pedestrian as such, which was one of the incident’s causes.  

Unlike traffic accidents caused by single-pixel errors, a risk in deep learning vision models that we discuss below, it is evident in the Uber incident that there were no  hardware failures or software malfunctions. The only problem was that the entire autonomous driving system did not fully consider how to respond to the scene, that is, the decision-making process was flawed, exhibiting the flaws of the vision model. 

Using a GPT decision-making system model with many parameters trained with RLHF can better handle such situations. The decision-making system will make actions based on what a human would likely do in this situation. When a human is uncertain about what an object in front of them is, they will most likely choose to go around it or stop. 

The risks 

As mentioned earlier, deep learning models for autonomous driving can still be dangerous with potential accidents being caused by single-pixel errors. Taking vision model adversarial attacks as an example, changing a pixel in the original image might cause the classification result of a traffic light to change from red to green. In a high-level autonomous driving system, when the classification result of a traffic light into the control loop is introduced, an error caused by a single pixel could lead to traffic accidents. A single-pixel error might not necessarily come from a deliberate attack; it might also be caused by hardware failures, such as a bit error in RAM or a problem with the logic of a certain adder or multiplier. Whichever the source, the ultimate results can be disastrous 

In addition to the computer vision model’s adversarial attacks, ChatGPT is more likely to be targeted by prompt injection attacks. Prompt injection was first reported by Jonathan Cefalu in May 2022 and demonstrated by Riley Goodside in September 2022, by showing how to make a model ignore the original instructions and translate a sentence to “Haha pwned!!”:

In a recent example, a Stanford student successfully guided Bing to reveal its secrets using the prompt injection technique, including its engineering code name “Sydney” (not meant to be disclosed), its ability to understand English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, and Dutch, and the requirement that its responses do not violate copyright laws.  


While issues like prompt injection are hopefully unlikely to be carried over in future iterations of ChatGPT, in considering the applications of ChatGPT in the automotive industry, it is important to also note examples of potential security concerns as they demonstrate the many challenges to applying GPT models in real-world scenarios. 

It is difficult to fully predict how ChatGPT can change the industry or how quickly AI will develop from here. For the automotive industry, ChatGPT is certainly not the first AI model to have pushed autonomous driving to new lengths. While these new developments excite imagination, expectations should be tempered with the right security considerations, especially since the automotive industry is in the middle of making rigorous steps to defend itself against an evolving threat landscape.
